Fox Government Arrests Indigenous Farmers in Chiapas for Planting Radishes and Flowers

The Other Journalism with the Other Campaign in Chiapas

September 9, 2006

On Friday, Juan Jiménez, 33, and Pedro Jiménez Gómez, 18, armed with gardening rakes, walked out to work the field where they cultivate radishes, cucumbers, carrots and flowers to sell in the markets of San Cristóbal, Chiapas. Agents of the federal attorney general’s office (PGR, in its Spanish initials) seized their rakes and placed the two men under arrest. As of Saturday morning they were still imprisoned in the PGR offices of San Cristóbal de Las Casas.

About 80 neighbors and family members from their community, Huitepec Sección 2, kept vigil overnight outside of the PGR building near the entrance to the new federal highway that connects San Cristóbal with the state capital of Tuxtla Gutiérrez. The highway was built through an ecological reserve. Overlooking the highway and the PGR office is the tallest mountain surrounding San Cristóbal, known as Tzontehuitz. Atop the mountain are various telecommunications and media company antennas, also in the Huitepec “ecological reserve.” The reserve includes private property, homes, and government land. According to yesterday’s police action, it is perfectly fine to ram a highway through or keep a microwave tower atop an ecological reserve, but not to plant radishes. Prosecutors demand 20,000 pesos (about $2,000 dollars) bail for the release of the two prisoners, an amount that surpasses their average annual income. They are charged with the crime of “change of land use.”

Montes Claros Call to Action for Climate Justice

Mon, 2006-09-11 23:45

The Centro de Agricultura Alternativa, the Comissão Pastoral da Terra, the Sociedade da Terra Redonda of Rio Pardo, and the Alert Against the Green Desert Network in coordination with the Durban Group for Climate Justice produced the following Call to Action during the recent Climate Justice meeting held in Brazil. It is aimed as a tool for local people struggling against a number of projects that are or could be subsidised by the carbon market. It is intended as a means of translating this issue in an understandable manner, thereby enabling people’s informed participation in the struggle against climate change and for climate justice. The Durban Group, aims at “bringing climate back to the people” and linking climate to already existing struggles constitutes an important means to that end.

In Consideration of Property Damage as a Tool for Social Change

Tue, 2006-09-05 00:50

All social movements have a raison d’ètre; we are nothing if not a group of people united around some broad and general unity of purpose. Social movements arise in order to move a given situation to where we want it to be. We accomplish our goals through careful consideration and formulation of an overall strategy capable of achieving our objectives. This strategic plan on how to create change relies on utilization of a variety of tactics.

This is an article from the New People, a progressive newspaper in Pittsburgh, writen in response to outcry from the more liberal elements of the local activist community to an emergency protest against the massacre in Haditha.

The Perma-revolution

Mon, 2006-09-04 02:50

The Perma-Revolution

The decline of the anti-globalization movement in the US and the amazing surge of support by anarchists after the devastation of hurricane Katrina suggests a new political and tactical alignment is possible in North America.

Anarchists did an admirable job in infusing revolutionary ideals, tactics and discourse into the anti-globalization movement. Traditional reformists campaigns (e.g. anti-sweatshop) and mainstream unions (e.g. teamsters) were enticed to accept diversity of tactics, consensus, decentralization based on affinity groups and other core anarchist principles. We were able to tie these limited campaigns into our greater critique of the state and capital, while exposing many diverse folks to the ideas and dreams of anarchy. The latest antiwar (perhaps better described as anti-Iraq war) movement has been a failure for the North American anarchist movement, despite some serious efforts by San Francisco anarchists. Co-opted and manipulated by authoritarian front groups and non-revolutionary coalitions, the last anti-war movement quickly rejected many of the principles and un-learned the good practices that made the anti-globalization movements so dynamic and effective in this country. Convergences, trainings, skill-shares, spokes-councils, medical clinics, legal support teams, and free kitchens, disappeared overnight. Participation in the anti-war rallies became the atomizing, choreographed experience of leftist around the globe, where people were bused to the rally, walked around waiving their pitiful signs pre-made by one of the front-groups, listened to some tedious empty speeches, and then got back on the bus to return home content with the fulfillment of their democratic duty.

Bikes, Death and Sacrifice: A Short Story of my Night and Critical Mass

Sun, 2006-08-27 22:36

8/26/2006 | A story and meditation on my strange adventures with death, bikes and sacrifice in New York City.

By onto

I started out biking from Brooklyn to Union Square to catch this months critical mass bike ride. Saw a friend on the bridge. "I'm heading off to Seaport to see Ted Leo". "Cool, I'm going to Critical Mass." "Have fun." "Later". I made it to Union Sq north by 7pm. Chilled for an hour listening to the Rev Billy give his shpiel with the Hungry Marching band behind him. Flyers galore, beautiful bikes and beautiful people too. About 30 scooter cops on Union Sq. east waiting. Another batch on broadway waiting to snatch us. Fuck it. Let's go. Dozens of Cities Participate in "Critical Mass" Solidarity Bike Ride for "Climate Justice" on the Hurricane Katrina Anniversary

Sun, 2006-08-27 22:29

A strong scientific consensus exists that the 2005 hurricane season was fueled by global warming -- and the crimes of the oil industry in the Gulf go beyond global warming. On Friday, August 25th -- one year from the day Katrina reached hurricane strength and slammed into the coast of Florida -- cyclists from at least 28 cities around the country joined forces in a solidarity bike ride with Katrina survivors to highlight this reality. Their goal was to remind folks that the racist tragedy in the Gulf continues, to demand that it never be repeated, and to raise awareness about the role of the oil industry and global warming in environmental injustice.

"Critical Mass" is a celebration of bike culture, a meaningful alternative to car culture and greenhouse gas generating fossil fuels. It takes place wherever there is energy, often on the last Friday of the month.

FINAL EMPIRE - CHAPTER 3

Sun, 2006-08-13 23:07

The Final Empire: The Collapse of Civilization and the Seed of the Future

Part Two: THE COLLAPSE OF THE ECOSYSTEM

CHAPTER 3:

SOIL: THE BASIS OF LIFE The Organic Rights

All beings of the earth, from microbes to elephants exist in a web of organic energy flows. Everything in the material world is food and everything is excrement. Everything is part of the energy flow. Even edges of tectonic plates slide down into the magma, which is then spouted out of volcanoes. When the flow of energy comes from the sun to be consumed by the plant, this begins a succession of energy transformations called the food chain. Beings eat each other. This flow of solar energy undergoes many transformations. In addition to these connections in the food chain there are many more energy connections that are of a cooperative and contributory nature. Beings provide many services for one another that have nothing to do with eating each other. Bees pollinate flowers, birds transport and deposit seeds. Fungi combine with the root hairs of plants and the ensemble generates food for both plants and fungi that otherwise neither would be able to absorb. Each being, because it lives according to its nature, contributes to the smooth functioning of the whole.

Tearing Down the Master's House: An Interview with Derrick Jensen

Sun, 2006-08-13 01:11

"Pacifists say I'm calling for violence and the truth is I am not. I am calling people to think for themselves. Look at the situation, let's just look at it. What is happening? 90% of the large fish in the oceans are gone. Many of us have diseases of civilization. Civilization is killing us, it's putting us in jobs we don't like and it is killing the planet and committing genocide against everyone it encounters and that is what this book is really about: what are we going to do about this? What do you want to do about it and what are your gifts? As I say near the end, that's why I go on so long, and I express my puzzlements and I go off in one direction and then another direction. What I am trying to do is model a process for people to go through to figure out their own answers. What I really want is for people to think for themselves and feel for themselves and to listen to their own land base and to ask that land base. Start a relationship with the land where you live. Ask that land what it needs from you. Because the truth is the land is the basis for everything."
